Phase 1: Reflect on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
What is my knowledge of technology? (TK)
My knowledge of technology is fairly superficial. I feel comfortable using the programs within Microsoft Office, navigating through internet sites, and using social networking sites. I am also comfortable using programs that my district uses, including: United Streaming, Compass Odyssey, Measures of Academic Progress, and applications through Renaissance Learning. I am not as comfortable with SmartBoards, Wikis, Blogs, or troubleshooting when technology problems arise.
What is my knowledge of pedagogy? (PK)
Through my position as a Title 1 teacher, I use mainly small group instruction. Within my small group framework, I use direct instruction for Phonemic Awareness or Phonics instruction, modeling throughout the whole lesson (including the book introduction and comprehension portions), and one-on-one for skill focus. I feel this framework allows the lessons to be broken up and provides a routine for the students. Through our action research project, I am hoping to strengthen the framework of the small group lessons.
What is my knowledge of the content? (CK)
I have completed two years of teaching Title 1 Reading and am looking forward to my third! I graduated from Iowa State University with B.A. in Elementary Education with endorsements in reading, social studies and middle school Instruction. When acquiring my Illinois teaching license, my transcripts offer endorsements in reading, social studies and language arts. I am currently working toward earning my masters in teaching and leadership.
Where do I see myself in the TPACK model?
As I mentioned above, I am not as comfortable with SmartBoards, Wikis, Blogs, or troubleshooting when technology problems arise. I feel this is due to learning to use new technology that I have not used or been trained in. Although I am not comfortable, I feel that I am willing to learn and see how I could best incorporate that technology into my teaching. It is fairly difficult to incorporate technology into my teaching since I have only a half an hour for each small group and that time is meant for reading remediation.
